What are Paritta?

Paritta, generally translated as "protection" or "safeguard," refers to the Buddhist practice of reciting certain verses and scriptures in order to ward off misfortune or danger, as well as to the specific verses and discourses recited as Paritta texts. The practice of reciting or listening to the Paritta suttas began very early in the history of Buddhism.

These are some of the most common Paritta, often chanted daily. To memorize them is of great merit, and beneficial to all sentient beings.

Dhajagga Paritta

Taken from the Dhajagga Sutta, this Paritta enumerates the qualities of the Triple Gems.

Karaṇīya  Metta Sutta

This is often chanted for the benefit of all sentient beings, and has 11 benefits attributed to it.

Khandha Paritta

Taken from a Jataka tale, this Paritta is used for protection against animals, poisons, and Nāgas.

Mora Paritta

Taken from a Jataka Tale, this Paritta is used for protection against snares, traps, and danger.
